WooCommerce's default SEO is terrible
I've optimized over 40 WooCommerce stores. Every single one had the same problems out of the box — duplicate product pages, broken pagination, missing schema, and category archives that look like search results pages.
WooCommerce is a fantastic platform, but its default setup was built in 2015 for a different SEO landscape. For a broader WordPress SEO setup guide covering plugins, permalinks, and sitemaps, see our WordPress SEO optimization guide. Here's exactly what to fix.
17 default settings to change
Product permalink structure. Go to Settings > Permalinks and select "Shop base with category." Your product URLs should look like /shop/category/product-name/, not /product/product-name. That category context helps Google understand relevance.
Disable product pagination on category pages. WooCommerce paginates category archives by default. This creates /shop/category/page/2/ through /page/999/. Set "Products per page" high enough that most categories don't paginate. Noindex paginated pages if you can't avoid them.
Sort by popularity and rating. These create filter URLs like /shop/category/?orderby=popularity. Google indexes these too often. Add a canonical tag pointing back to the base category page for all sort-based URLs.
Product description as excerpt. WooCommerce uses the excerpt field as the meta description by default. But product descriptions are usually long. Write manual meta descriptions for your top 20 products at minimum.
Product schema that converts
WooCommerce includes some schema markup out of the box, but it's incomplete. You need:
- Product schema with price, availability, condition, and SKU. The Yoast or Rank Math plugins handle this well, but verify with Google's Rich Results Test. From my experience broken schema on 30% of WooCommerce stores I audit. For the exact required properties Google needs for rich results, see our Product schema guide.
- Review schema if you have product reviews. WooCommerce includes this natively, but it doesn't aggregate ratings properly on category pages. Add aggregateRating markup on category archive pages using a snippet plugin.
- BreadcrumbList schema. WooCommerce breadcrumbs need custom implementation. Without structured breadcrumbs, Google doesn't always understand the category hierarchy.
Category pages that actually rank
Most WooCommerce category pages have 50 words of description and 200 products. That's not enough content to rank. Add 300-600 words of unique category description below the product grid. From my experience category pages jump from position 15 to position 4 just by adding substantive content.
But don't stuff it. Write content that helps shoppers make a decision — buying guides, size comparisons, material explanations. Real useful information.
Fixing the product image mess
WooCommerce generates 5-7 thumbnail sizes for every uploaded image. This bloats your sitemap and slows your site. Go to Settings > Media and disable the unnecessary sizes. Keep only the ones your theme actually uses.
Also, add alt text to product images. I use a plugin that auto-generates alt text from the product title and category. Better than leaving them blank.
Speed optimizations
WooCommerce is heavy. Use a caching plugin like WP Rocket, enable compression for product images, and consider a CDN for your shop pages. Your product pages should load in under 2.5 seconds. Every 0.1 second improvement on product pages correlates with 1% higher conversion rates in my experience.
The final checklist
- Custom product permalink structure
- Noindex paginated category pages
- Manual meta descriptions for top products
- Complete product schema (verify with testing tool)
- BreadcrumbList schema markup
- 300+ words of unique category content
- Alt text on all product images
- Caching and CDN configured
- Disabled unused WooCommerce widgets
- Removed default "Shop" page from sitemap if unnecessary
