The Local SEO Audit: 14 Things to Check Before You Touch the Map Pack

Local SEO Is a Different Game
National SEO is about authority and content. Local SEO is about consistency, relevance, and proximity. I've seen national SEO experts walk into local work and fail because they optimized for the wrong signals entirely — optimizing a service page like a blog post while the Google Business Profile sat there half-filled.
Here's what actually moves the map pack in 2026: a complete, accurate, and actively managed Google Business Profile, consistent citations across the web, real reviews, and local relevance in your on-page content. Rank in those four and the local pack takes care of itself.
A dentist client of mine is the story I tell everyone. Her profile had been set up once and abandoned. Two categories, five photos from 2021, and a phone number that routed to a dead line. Her rankings sat between positions 8 and 12 for her main procedures — invisible. We rebuilt the profile, matched her citations across the big directories, and seeded a review flow. Ninety days later she was in the top 3 map pack for six of her eight main services. Nothing on the website changed.
The Audit Checklist
1. Google Business Profile basics
Is your profile claimed, verified, and complete? Name, address, phone, website, categories, business hours, description — every field filled with accurate data. An incomplete profile is the most common reason a business doesn't show.
2. Categories
Are your primary and secondary categories actually the ones customers search for? A "restaurant" that also delivers groceries should say both. The primary category carries the most weight, so make it the one that matches your main service.
3. NAP consistency
Your Name, Address, and Phone number must match across your profile, your website, and every directory. Even a small variation — "St" vs "Street" — counts as inconsistency and chips away at trust. Audit the major citation sites: Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, and any industry-specific directories.
4. Reviews
Are you actively generating reviews? Do you respond to them? A steady review flow plus responses is one of the strongest local signals left. Your ratio matters too — a business with 200 reviews on Google and 3 on Yelp looks lopsided.
5. Local landing pages
Do you have a dedicated page per location or service? If you serve multiple cities, each city should have its own page with local content — not a templated paragraph with the city name swapped in.
6. Schema markup
Are your local pages marked up with LocalBusiness schema? Structured data helps Google understand what you are and where you serve. If you're new to it, my schema markup guide walks through the basics.
7. Proximity and relevance in content
Does your content use the local phrases people actually search — "plumber in Austin" instead of just "plumber"? Local keywords in titles, headings, and body copy align your site with local intent.
8. Embedding and linking
Does your site embed a Google Map and link to your profile? It ties the profile and the site together in Google's eyes — a small but real consistency signal.
How to Run the Audit Efficiently
A full local audit by hand is tedious. Here's the short version of what I do:
1. Check the Google Business Profile completeness and category accuracy.
2. Run the local SEO audit tool — it walks a site through the local checklist and flags what's missing.
3. Search your business name in Google Maps and compare your profile against your competitors'.
4. Spot-check NAP on five major citation sites.
5. Read your last ten reviews and note what customers actually complain about — that's your content brief.
The Fixes, Prioritized
If you only do three things this month, do these:
- Fill every field in your Google Business Profile and pick the right primary category.
- Fix NAP inconsistencies on the biggest directories.
- Set up a review process — ask happy customers, respond to everything.
Those three cover the majority of the impact. Everything else is polish.
FAQ
How often should I audit my local SEO?
Quarterly at minimum. Profiles change, hours change, reviews accumulate, and competitors update their pages. A local audit every 90 days keeps you from drifting.
Do local citations still matter in 2026?
Yes, but quality over quantity. A handful of authoritative, accurate citations beat fifty spammy directory listings. Consistency matters more than volume.
Why is my business not showing in the map pack?
Usually one of three things: incomplete or unverified profile, inconsistent NAP data, or too few reviews compared to competitors in your immediate area.
Run Your Local Audit
Local SEO rewards the basics executed consistently — nothing exotic. Run the local SEO audit on your site, fix the profile and citation issues this week, and start the review flow. Do that, and the map pack stops being a mystery and starts being a habit.
