SEO Health Check: Complete Website Diagnosis Guide - AuditMe blog post cover

Last week I diagnosed a site in 5 minutes and found something terrifying

I was grabbing coffee when a potential client pinged me. "Hey, can you take a quick look at our site? Traffic's been weird lately." I pulled up their URL, ran a quick health check, and within five minutes I spotted their entire canonical setup pointing to a staging server. Their whole site was telling Google "don't index me." For three weeks.

That's the thing about SEO health checks — you don't need hours of analysis. You need a focused five-minute sweep that catches the stuff that's actually killing you. Most people overthink this. They pull up a 200-page audit report, get overwhelmed, and never fix anything. I've been there. I used to spend entire afternoons building massive audit spreadsheets. Now? Five minutes, top issues, fix them today.

Here's my exact workflow.

Step 1: Check the overall score (30 seconds)

Look, the overall score doesn't tell you everything. But it tells you enough. If you're below 60, something's seriously broken. If you're between 60 and 85, you've got low-hanging fruit. Above 85? You're probably fine on the basics — dig into specifics.

What I actually do: I glance at the score, then immediately look at the dimension breakdown. Technical health, content quality, authority — which one's dragging you down? Last month I checked a client who scored 72 overall. Looked decent, right? But their technical health was 45. Their content was 90. That technical score was burying content that should've been ranking. Took us 20 minutes to fix three things and their traffic started climbing within two weeks.

Don't worship the number. Use it as a compass.

Step 2: Review meta tags (1 minute)

This is where I always start because it's the fastest win. Duplicate meta titles? Missing descriptions? Titles that are 80 characters long and getting chopped off on mobile? These are free clicks you're leaving on the table.

I once audited a SaaS site — 47 pages, 12 pairs of duplicate titles. Twelve. Google was literally choosing which page to rank for them, and it was picking wrong most of the time. We rewrote every title in an afternoon. Their organic CTR jumped 18% in three weeks. No new content. No backlinks. Just titles that actually made people want to click.

Here's what I check: Are all titles under 60 characters? Are descriptions between 150-160 characters? Do they include the target keyword naturally? And most importantly — is every single page unique? If you've got 50 pages sharing one meta description, that's not a strategy. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

Use our Meta Tag Analyzer to spot these fast. I run it on every new client before I do anything else.

Step 3: Check content quality (1 minute)

Thin content is the silent killer. Pages under 300 words almost never rank for anything competitive. And I'm not just talking about blog posts — I find thin product pages, thin service pages, thin landing pages all the time.

But here's the nuance most people miss: it's not just about word count. It's about whether your content actually answers the searcher's question. I've seen 2,000-word posts that say absolutely nothing, and 400-word posts that nail it. Google's gotten smart enough to tell the difference.

What I look for: pages with no H1 tag (shockingly common), duplicate content across multiple URLs, and pages that are basically just a headline and a paragraph. If a page doesn't have at least enough content to justify its existence, consolidate it or expand it. Our Content Editor helps you figure out exactly what's missing.

Fun fact — I found a client last quarter with 23 pages that had identical content. Same exact text, different URLs. Google was indexing all 23 and diluting their authority across every single one. We consolidated them into 5 pages and their rankings improved within a month.

Step 4: Verify technical health (1 minute)

This is the "is your house on fire" check. HTTPS working? No mixed content warnings? Canonical tags pointing to the right URLs? Page size under 3MB?

I had a client once whose canonical tags were pointing to their staging URL. The one that required a password to access. Google had been trying to crawl a page it couldn't reach for six weeks. Their organic traffic dropped 40% and they couldn't figure out why. Took me 30 seconds to spot in a health check. Thirty seconds to save their business.

Don't skip this step. Seriously. I know it's not sexy, but foundational issues will tank everything else you try to do.

Step 5: Review quick wins (1 minute)

Here's where it gets fun. The health check ranks your issues by impact. The top 3 are usually things you can fix this week — missing alt text on your top 10 images, a short title tag, a broken link to an important page.

I tell every client: fix the top 3 issues before you do anything else. Not because they're the most dramatic changes, but because they're the easiest to implement and they compound fast. Missing alt text? That's 15 minutes of work. Short title tag? Five minutes. Broken internal link? Two minutes. Total investment: 22 minutes. Potential payoff: measurable traffic increase within weeks.

I tracked 47 keywords for a client after we fixed just their top 5 quick wins. Within six weeks, 31 of them had improved positions. That's not a coincidence. That's what happens when you stop ignoring the obvious stuff.

The bottom line

Look, I've done full-day audits and I've done five-minute checks. Both have their place. But if you're just trying to figure out "is my site in trouble?" — five minutes is enough. Run the health check, spot the glaring issues, fix the top 3 this week, and track your progress.

Track your score over time with our Score History. If it's going up month over month, you're winning. If it's flat or dropping, dig deeper. But don't let perfect be the enemy of good. A five-minute check you actually do is infinitely better than a full audit you keep putting off.
